The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a sustainability initiative of the European Union under the legal basis of the European Union's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). A DPP is a digital record that provides standardized information about a product's origin, composition, environmental impact, and lifecycle. It creates transparency across value chains and enables organizations to share relevant product information with business partners, customers, and authorities.
The DPP use case in Catena-X enables the secure, sovereign, and standardized exchange of the data required for Digital Product Passports across company boundaries. Uniform processes and shared rules ensure an efficient process for all companies while allowing each participant to maintain full control over its data. This supports efficient collaboration across complex supply networks and helps organizations prepare for evolving regulatory requirements.
A DPP helps companies:
• Demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements
• Improve product transparency and traceability
• Support circular economy initiatives
• Share sustainability information with customers and partners
• Enable efficient R-strategies: reuse, repair, remanufacturing, recycling, ...
First implementation in Catena-X: The first large-scale DPP implementation in Catena-X is the Battery Passport. Under the EU Battery Regulation, the first Digital Product Passports for certain battery categories will become mandatory from February 2027. Other priority product categories are supposed to follow quickly such as Iron and steel, energy-related products, Textiles, tyres, and aluminium, ICT products and more.
